The only source that can be discovered is based on Lontar Babad Mengawi. It is explained in the Mengawi chronicle that before establishing Taman Ayun Temple, the founder of the Mengawi Kingdom named I Gusti Agung Putu had built a temple on the aspect of Lake Beratan. It is not specifically stated when the Ulun Danu Temple was founded. Lontar only mentions that Taman Ayun Temple was once founded on Anggara Kliwon Mendangsia, Saka Sad Bhuta Yaksa Dewa, or Saka 1556 (1634 AD). Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that the establishment of Ulun Danu Temple was carried out before the 12 months 1556 Saka.

To visit the temple which is in the middle of the lake, we have to use a boat that is already available by the lake. Besides visiting the main temple which is in the middle of the lake, we can visit other temple buildings because like the temples in Bali in general, Pura Ulun Danu is divided into three parts; outer, middle, and internal pages.

Architecture

Outer courtyard (Pura Penataran Agung)

In this section we will find Candi Bentar, which is the entrance to the outer courtyard. In the central courtyard we will find the Great Kori Stupa decorated with sapta-nsi with an entrance ladder decorated with an elephant statue. Peering into the recesses of the stupa, we will find a statue of a monk, whilst the walls of the stupa are decorated with a swastika as a symbol of the sun and eternity. There is no wall dividing the outer courtyard and the middle courtyard, but a boundary stone association on which there are several statues.
